Evidence from people who sat through fieldwork

These notes come from finance directors and controllers who commissioned statutory audits, interim reviews, or first-year support. They mention specific friction — because audits always have some.

“They postponed final fieldwork by a week when our inventory count slipped — then still issued the opinion before the bank’s covenant date. The interim sampling notes were blunt about our GRNI backlog, which hurt a little and helped a lot.”

Keiko M., Finance Director · Statutory audit

“For our first year as a standalone subsidiary, the opening-balance pack saved us from inventing roll-forward schedules at midnight. I still wish they had warned earlier that consignment stock needed separate tags — we scrambled on observation morning.”

Tomás R., Controller · Opening balance support

“The interim review caught a cut-off habit our sales desk had normalized: invoices dated to the month of shipment even when trucks left after midnight. Fixing it mid-year made the statutory audit quieter than last time.”

Yuki N., Accounting Manager · Interim review

“Aya’s English summary for our Singapore parent matched the Japanese working papers without watering down the warranty provision discussion. That alone justified choosing a smaller atelier over a busier firm.”

Marcus L., CFO · Statutory audit, foreign parent

Extended story: Regional manufacturer, March year-end

A metal-parts maker in Fukushima Prefecture needed a clean opinion for a refinancing. Inventory sat in three sheds; perpetual records lagged physical counts by nearly a week. During interim fieldwork we mapped receiving logs against the ledger and found goods-received-not-invoiced entries that understated payables.

Management cleared the backlog before year-end. We attended the count, tested sealed cartons on a sample basis, and closed the opinion eight days before the lender’s package deadline. The management letter still flagged dual custody for wire releases — accepted by the board with a three-month remediation plan.
